Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Red and green gel food coloring
  • White sanding sugar (optional for rolling)

Instructions

  1. Beat softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in egg and vanilla.
  2. Add flour, baking powder, and salt. Divide dough into 3 bowls. Tint one red, one green, leave one plain.
  3. Roll out each dough between parchment sheets. Stack red, white, and green layers. Roll into a tight log.
  4. Wrap the dough log and chill for 2+ hours.
  5. Slice into 1/4-inch rounds, roll edges in sanding sugar if desired, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes.
