Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup soft butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream or yogurt
  • 1 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • Red and green gel food colors
  • 1 cup butter (for frosting)
  • 16 oz cream cheese
  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla (for frosting)
  • Pinch salt (for frosting)
  • Chopped pecans (for decor)
  • Holiday sprinkles (for decor)

Instructions

  1. Whisk dry ingredients. Beat butter + sugar till fluffy. Add eggs one by one, then buttermilk, yogurt, vinegar, and vanilla.
  2. Divide into 3 bowls. Color red, green, and red again. Bake 8” pans at 350°F for 25–30 mins. Cool.
  3. Beat frosting ingredients till smooth.
  4. Stack layers with frosting between. Cover outside. Top with nuts and sprinkles.

Notes

  • Use gel coloring for brightness.
  • Chill before slicing.
  • Serve with cocoa, ginger tea, or peppermint latte.
