Juicy, hearty, saucy and deeply comforting Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, grated
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce alternative (like pomegranate molasses or soy sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced (for the onion gravy)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for the onion gravy)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste (for the onion gravy)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated onion, garlic, egg, Worcestershire alternative, mustard, salt, and pepper. Shape into 4 oval patties.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sear the patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add more oil if needed and sauté sliced onions until soft and caramelized, about 10 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle flour over onions, stir and cook 1–2 minutes. Gradually pour in beef broth while stirring. Add soy sauce and thyme.
  5. Bring gravy to simmer, then return steaks to the skillet. Cover and cook on low for 15–20 minutes until cooked through and sauce thickens.
  6. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve with mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

  • Serve with creamy mashed potatoes, buttered noodles or steamed rice.
  • Add sautéed green beans or glazed carrots on the side.
  • Spoon extra onion gravy over your side for full comfort.
  • Mix in a touch of grated zucchini for extra moisture and nutrition.
  • Replace flour with cornstarch for a gluten-free version.
  • Add a splash of vinegar to gravy for depth and balance.
