Ingredients
Scale
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp ground cloves
½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
½ cup unsalted butter, softened
½ cup brown sugar
1 egg
½ cup molasses
½ cup hot water
½ cup milk
¾ cup brown sugar
1 ½ cups boiling water
2 tbsp unsalted butter
½ tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
Mix the dry ingredients in a medium bowl.
Cream the butter and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl, then add the egg and molasses.
Stir in the hot water and milk until combined.
Pour the batter into a greased 8×8-inch baking dish.
Whisk together the brown sugar, boiling water, vanilla, and butter for the sauce, then gently pour over the batter.
Bake at 350°F for 40–45 minutes until the top is firm and the sauce is bubbling underneath.
Notes
Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
The batter will be thin, which helps create the pudding layer.
