Classic Shakshuka is a rustic, hearty, and spicy dish featuring eggs poached in a savory tomato sauce, perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili flakes (optional)
  • 45 fresh tomatoes, chopped or 1 can crushed tomatoes
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 45 large eggs
  • Handful of cherry tomatoes
  • Fresh parsley or cilantro, chopped

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, warm olive oil. Sauté onions and red bell pepper until softened.
  2. Add garlic, cumin, paprika, and chili flakes. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Stir in tomatoes and season with salt and pepper. Let the sauce simmer for 10–15 minutes until thickened.
  4. Add cherry tomatoes and stir gently.
  5. Make small wells in the sauce and crack the eggs into each one.
  6. Cover the skillet and cook on low heat for 5–7 minutes, or until eggs are just set with runny yolks.
  7. Garnish with chopped parsley or cilantro and freshly cracked black pepper. Serve hot with warm bread or flatbread.

Notes

  • Let the sauce simmer long enough to concentrate flavors.
  • Crack eggs carefully to keep yolks intact.
  • Make it vegan by skipping eggs and adding chickpeas or tofu cubes.
