Soft, buttery, sweet, and wonderfully festive Christmas sugar cookies perfect for holiday celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups powdered sugar (for icing)
  • 2 tablespoons meringue powder (for icing)
  • 56 tablespoons water (for icing)
  • Gel food coloring (red, white, green, black…)
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and sugar together. Add egg and vanilla, then mix in the dry ingredients. Shape dough into two discs and chill for 1 hour.
  2. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into Christmas shapes and bake at 350°F for 8–10 minutes. Cool completely.
  3. Mix powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water until glossy. Color as desired with food coloring.
  4. Pipe icing details onto cookies, fill shapes, and add sprinkles. Let dry fully before storing.

Notes

  • Dough must be chilled for clean shapes.
  • Royal icing dries hard, making it great for gifting.
  • Cookies freeze beautifully.
