A moist and rich chocolate pear loaf cake that is both elegant and irresistibly chocolatey, perfect for any dessert occasion.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt or sour cream
  • 3 small pears, peeled and cored from the bottom
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Prep pan — Preheat to 350°F (175°C). Line a loaf pan with parchment.
  2. Mix dry — Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, salt.
  3. Mix wet — Whisk oil + sugar. Add eggs, vanilla, yogurt.
  4. Combine — Add dry into wet until just mixed.
  5. Assemble — Pour half batter, insert upright pears, add remaining batter.
  6. Bake — 50–60 minutes until tester beside pear comes out clean.
  7. Serve — Cool → dust with powdered sugar → slice to reveal whole pears.

Notes

  • Use GF flour for gluten-free version
  • Swap yogurt for plant-based yogurt for dairy-free
  • Pick pears that are ripe but firm
