A rich, fudgy, cloud-creamy cake that is dangerously indulgent with layers that melt into pure bliss.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened
  • Chocolate crumbs or crushed cake scraps
  • Chocolate chunks or shavings
  • Extra whipped cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two square or round cake pans.
  2. Whisk dry cake ingredients together. Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.
  3. Divide batter evenly and bake 30–35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  4. Beat cream cheese until smooth. Add powdered sugar and vanilla.
  5. Whip heavy cream separately to stiff peaks, then gently fold into cream cheese mixture.
  6. Level cake layers if needed. Spread a thick layer of cream filling over the first cake layer.
  7. Add second cake layer, press gently, and frost the top with remaining cream.
  8. Sprinkle generously with chocolate crumbs and chunks. Chill at least 2 hours before slicing.

Notes

  • Chill before slicing for bakery-perfect cuts.
  • Use Dutch-processed cocoa for deeper chocolate flavor.
  • Swap cream cheese for mascarpone for extra luxury.
